What is Functional Nutrition?
Functional nutrition is a personalized, root-cause approach to health that uses food as medicine, viewing the body as an interconnected system to address the underlying causes of illness, not just symptoms, by considering diet, lifestyle, genetics, and environment. It moves beyond "one-size-fits-all" diets to create individualized plans that support long-term vitality and address chronic conditions like inflammation, gut issues, and hormonal imbalances, using nutrient-dense whole foods and targeted interventions.
Lara Leach is a degree-qualified registered Holistic and Functional Nutritionist (BSc Hons NT, RHN, FHP-C) based in beautiful British Columbia, Canada.
For the last decade, Lara has supported clients across BC and around the world, helping them understand their bodies, restore balance, and feel their best through personalized nutrition and functional medicine.
Lara Leach Functional Nutritionist is built on something older than functional medicine itself. It's built on the idea of Ubuntu, the philosophy Lara grew up with in Zimbabwe: umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu, a person is a person through other people. It's usually spoken about in terms of human relationships, but the same logic holds inside the body. Your gut doesn't operate in isolation from your hormones. Your sleep doesn't operate in isolation from your stress. Symptoms that look separate; bloating, fatigue, brain fog, skin flare-ups, are rarely separate at all; they're systems in relationship with each other.
It shows up in the client relationship too. Ubuntu isn't top-down, it's collaborative, built on showing up for each other. Telehealth with Lara reflects that: not a practitioner handing down a meal plan, but two people working out, together, what your particular body and your particular life actually need. No judgment for the protein bar eaten in the car or the takeaway ordered after a long week. Just a steady, collective approach to figuring out what's actually going on.
